Drop-in Library Zoom room

In the spring of 2020 we closed our campus doors completely, as the nation moved into a state of fully remote learning. The library immediately responded by launching a drop-in Zoom room designed to replicate the on-demand experience of a traditional reference desk. Since library doors have now reopened, we have moved back to an appointment-based model.

Virtual Reference Innovation

Over the years I have introduced a variety of new technology and workflows to improve the library’s virtual reference services. When the COVID pandemic hit us, many libraries were scrambling to bring their library services online and train staff to function remotely. Our virtual library infrastructure well-established and my team had the training to easily transition into a fully remote work environment. Some of the projects I have led include:
  • Hiring and training of Online Research & Instruction Librarians
  • Expanding live chat online service hours
  • Rollout of a virtual research appointment scheduler
  • Rollout of our Text-a-librarian service
  • An overhaul of the Library Knowledge Base
  • Integration of videoconferencing into live chat
  • Proactive chat embedded across website and discovery

Evaluation, acquisition, and implementation of a Library Discovery System

In 2018 I rolled out the EBSCO Discovery Service at Berkeley College, providing a single gateway into the vast array of physical and electronic library collections. We branded this tool as "LibSearch" and integrated it into the website as a central search portal for our students and faculty.

Library website redesign using Springshare LibGuides

In 2019 I led a redesign of the library’s website, leveraging a usability study published by the User Experience Committee. The site was designed with the mobile experience and accessibility at the forefront of the planning process.

Integration of the library into the learning management system (Canvas)

During the College’s migration from Blackboard to Canvas I served as Chair of the LMS Innovation Task Force. Collaborating with Information Systems and Academic Affairs, I was able to fully integrate the library website into the LMS as a tab in the global navigation menu of every course.

Electronic collection development

As we continue to transition funding from physical to virtual library collections to support the digital preferences of our students, I oversee the evaluation and acquisition of databases, eBooks, streaming media collections, digital magazines, and other learning assets to support academic coursework and research.

County-wide Integrated Library System migration from Horizon to OPALS

In 2014 I was working for the Dutchess BOCES School Library System in NYS. One of the major projects I took on was a consortia-wide ILS migration from SirsiDynix’s Horizon to OPALS, an open source automated library system. OPALS now serves as the Union Catalog for 82 schools across the county.
