In addition to my full-time role, I teach online for the Information Technology Management Program at Berkeley College. I use a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning technologies to engage my students each week. From interactive simulations, to synchronous groupwork in Zoom breakout rooms, to weekly discussion boards, my teaching sets students up for success.
Virtual information literacy instruction
I have developed and taught online information literacy curriculum in K-12 and higher education, and collaborated with faculty in hundreds of courses across a variety of disciplines to teach information literacy in the context of course learning outcomes.
Embedding Library Content at Point-of-Need in the LMS
Over the years I’ve integrated a number of library resources and services into the Canvas and Blackboard learning management systems through the use of LTIs. I then created documentation and video tutorials on the use of these integrations, and provided training. See my guide for faculty and instructional designers here.
Library Orientation learning object
I designed an interactive course-integrated library orientation using Articulate Storyline. This learning object immerses students by placing them in scenario-based activities where they are required to interact with the characters and environment by clicking, hovering, dragging, dropping and exploring to proceed. By adopting elements of storytelling and gamification, students are fully engaged in the learning experience, and come away with a better understanding of the material. Learn more about this project in my book chapter in Planning Library Orientations: Case Studies from Around the World
Guest speakers in online courses
As a librarian I’m often invited into online courses as a guest speaker. As an adjunct faculty I often ask industry experts to Zoom into my course to speak with my students. As an administrator I host College-wide co-curricular events with authors, entrepreneurs, politicians and other persons of interest.
Virtual faculty workshops
I offer a series of trainings and workshops each semester for faculty. The availability of breakout rooms in Zoom allows me to replicate a more traditional computer-lab style workshop where I follow a Learn-Explore-Discuss pattern. Participants learn about a new tool, take time to explore it on their own in a guided activity, and then engage in small group discussion on how the tool can be best used to enhance instruction.
ACRL Distance & Online Learning Section events
As Co-Chair of the DOLS Instruction Committee, I plan and facilitate virtual professional development opportunities such as online roundtable events, virtual panels, and digital poster sessions for a national audience of educators.
